Y Combinator’s Garry Tan wants U.S. open-weight AI labs to ‘distill’ frontier models, too

Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan called for U.S. artificial intelligence laboratories to make distilled versions of frontier models available to the public. Tan stated that frontier models are trained on public human knowledge and that access to capable AI should be "a form of public good." Distilled models are smaller, less computationally expensive versions derived from larger AI systems.
