More than 9,500 people have died from illnesses linked to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to 9/11 attorney Michael Barasch. This exceeds the approximately 2,977 deaths from the attacks themselves. Barasch attributed the illnesses to exposure during and after the attacks.
