Massachusetts' highest court publicly reprimands judge accused of enabling immigrant to escape ICE

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court issued a public reprimand of Judge Shelley Joseph on August 15, 2023, after an immigrant departed her courtroom without being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials who were present. According to court records, Joseph instructed court officers to allow the individual to leave through a side exit while ICE agents were positioned at the main entrance. The court found Joseph violated judicial conduct rules but did not suspend or remove her from the bench.
