Gavin Newsom Signs California AI Safety Bills Backed by OpenAI, Anthropic

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed two bills Wednesday establishing new rules for outside evaluation of AI systems for safety. OpenAI and Anthropic supported the measures. The bills were signed during a week in which a researcher who previously worked at Anthropic and OpenAI publicly departed from their role.
