For 'horrible moment,' Bush White House thought US military shot down Flight 93

Condoleezza Rice, National Security Advisor during the September 11, 2001 attacks, stated that she and President George W. Bush believed a U.S. military fighter had shot down United Airlines Flight 93 while they were coordinating responses from a bunker. Rice described the moment as tense. Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members learned of other attacks through phone calls and decided to resist the hijackers; the crash killed all 33 passengers, seven crew members, and four hijackers aboard the aircraft.
