California, an Environmental Bastion, Warms to Nuclear Energy

California's state government is considering extending the operation of Diablo Canyon, its last operating nuclear power plant, and permitting construction of new reactors as part of efforts to increase clean energy generation. The state legislature passed legislation in 2022 that delayed the planned closure of Diablo Canyon, originally scheduled for 2030. Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order in 2023 directing the state energy commission to prepare licensing applications for new reactor construction.
