More than 1 in 10 chance AI ‘could kill all humans,’ says Anthropic safety lead after colleague quits
Wednesday, September 9, 2026
Dario Amodei, co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, said in a post on X that the company estimates a greater than 10 percent probability that advanced AI systems could cause human extinction by 2030. The statement came after Anthropic safety researcher Chris Olah resigned, stating in his resignation letter that AI labs including Anthropic are moving too quickly to develop powerful systems without adequate safety measures. Anthropic has not publicly released a full technical report detailing the methodology or assumptions underlying the extinction risk estimate.
