Cancer’s toll on 9/11 survivors is accelerating 25 years later

A Washington Post analysis found that the number of 9/11 survivors receiving assistance for cancer-related illnesses has tripled in recent years. The World Trade Center Health Program, which provides monitoring and treatment for people exposed to toxins at Ground Zero, has expanded its cancer patient roster significantly since 2001. As of the analysis date, the program covered thousands of enrollees, with cancer diagnoses continuing to increase among the survivor population. The toxins released during the attacks, including asbestos and other carcinogens, have been documented as causes of illness among those present at the site.
