Very hot drinks may damage the food pipe and increase cancer risk

Tuesday, September 8, 2026

The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified drinking very hot beverages as a Group 2A carcinogen in 2016, meaning there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans. The classification referred to the temperature and thermal injury of the beverage, not the beverage itself. The agency noted that cell damage from repeated exposure to very hot liquids may increase cancer risk in the esophagus.
