There’s a Global Network of Fungi Under Your Feet. This Is the First Complete Map
Sunday, July 5, 2026
Researchers created the first global map of fungal networks that connect to plant roots, according to a study published in the journal Nature. The fungal structures, known as mycorrhizal networks, transfer nutrients and water to plants while absorbing carbon from the soil. The map covers over 1 million observations from forests, grasslands, and other ecosystems across the world. Scientists used the data to model how these fungal networks influence carbon storage in soil and plant biomass.
