What Is Navier-Stokes, the ‘Millennium’ Math Problem OpenAI Claims to Have Solved?

Tuesday, September 8, 2026

OpenAI announced it had solved the Navier-Stokes problem, one of seven "Millennium Problems" designated by the Clay Mathematics Institute as among the most difficult unsolved problems in mathematics. The Navier-Stokes equations describe the motion of fluids and gases and are fundamental to physics, engineering, and climate modeling. A proof would require demonstrating either that solutions exist and are smooth for all conditions, or that they do not, which has eluded mathematicians since the equations were formulated in the 19th century. The Clay Mathematics Institute offers a one-million-dollar prize for a peer-reviewed proof of any Millennium Problem.
