Newsom admits democratic socialist ideas ‘mainstream’ in Democrat party: ‘Pretty aligned’

California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that the Democratic Party's positions on Medicare for all, climate change, and fossil fuels are aligned with those of the Democratic Socialists of America. Newsom made the remarks during a public discussion about party policy positions. The DSA is an independent political organization with approximately 95,000 members as of 2025.
