Former President Donald Trump awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously to Welles Crowther on January 20, 2025. Crowther, known as the "man in red bandana," died in the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center while helping evacuate people from the South Tower. The medal was presented to his family at a White House ceremony. Crowther was 24 years old when he died and was later identified through a red bandana found at the site that matched one he was known to wear.
