Cholesterol drug setback casts doubt over multibillion-dollar race

Novartis announced that its cholesterol drug candidate failed to meet primary endpoints in a clinical trial. Amgen and Eli Lilly are advancing separate drug candidates targeting lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), a cholesterol particle linked to cardiovascular disease. Both companies are testing whether lowering Lp(a) levels reduces heart attacks and strokes in patients.
