Thousands turn out in Serbia for funeral of 'Butcher of Bosnia' Ratko Mladić

Ratko Mladić, convicted of genocide for crimes during the 1990s Bosnian war, died on June 8, 2023, in a Serbian prison where he was serving a life sentence. Thousands of people attended his funeral in Serbia despite warnings from European Union officials against commemorating him. Mladić was arrested in 2011 after 16 years in hiding and was found guilty by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.
