U.N. Backs New Map Projection, Demands World Stop Making Africa Look Small

The United Nations voted Friday to promote alternative map projections that display Africa at a larger size relative to other continents. The vote followed an African-led initiative to move away from the Mercator projection, a 16th-century mapping method still widely used globally. The U.N. stated the new projections would more accurately reflect the relative sizes of continents.
