Volcano eruption triggers flight suspensions at Indonesia's main airport

Sunday, September 6, 2026

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted on January 15, 2026, sending ash into airspace near Jakarta. Garuda Indonesia and other airlines suspended flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the country's largest aviation hub, affecting more than 20,000 passengers. The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency raised the volcano's alert level to the second-highest status. Airlines resumed limited operations on January 16 after ash concentrations decreased.
