Elections in Germany Could Produce First Far-Right State Government Since Nazi Era: What to Know

Sunday, September 6, 2026

Elections in Saxony-Anhalt on February 23, 2025 could result in the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party winning an outright majority in the state legislature. The AfD finished second in the 2021 federal election with approximately 10.3 percent of the vote and has gained support in eastern German states. If the AfD wins a majority in Saxony-Anhalt, it would be the first time the party holds an outright majority in any state legislature.
