United Nations votes 164-1 for Equal Earth map after US brands it 'radical ideological project'
Saturday, September 5, 2026
The United Nations General Assembly voted 164-1 on December 19, 2024, to adopt the Equal Earth map projection for use in UN materials. The Equal Earth map displays landmasses, including Africa, at sizes closer to their actual geographic proportions than the commonly used Mercator projection. The United States cast the sole opposing vote. The U.S. delegation did not provide a public statement explaining its position at the time of the vote.
