Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have moved to restrict the use of automated license-plate readers by law enforcement in their states, despite police departments citing the technology's utility in criminal investigations. Abbott signed legislation limiting plate-reader data collection and retention in Texas. DeSantis took similar action in Florida. Police agencies in both states have stated that the cameras assist in locating stolen vehicles and identifying suspects in criminal cases.
