The United Nations backed a new world map that displays Africa at its actual geographic proportions. The United States opposed the measure. The initiative addresses the Mercator projection, a centuries-old mapping standard that distorts the relative sizes of landmasses, particularly enlarging Northern Hemisphere continents.
