Microsoft says virtually nobody was grabbing NYT articles through its chatbot

Friday, September 4, 2026

Microsoft stated in legal filings that its Copilot chatbot rarely reproduces full sentences from news articles and books. The company provided 8.2 million Copilot queries as evidence in response to copyright claims filed by The New York Times and book authors. Microsoft is defending against lawsuits alleging the chatbot generates content that substitutes for original published material.
