In Battle to Use ‘Ms.,’ Gloria Steinem Had to Fight The New York Times

Gloria Steinem exchanged letters with The New York Times' executive editor in the 1970s requesting that the newspaper use the honorific "Ms." instead of "Miss" or "Mrs." The Times did not immediately adopt the usage. Steinem was a co-founder of Ms. Magazine, which launched in 1971 and used the title as part of its editorial mission.
