University pays professor $600K after being punished for parodying land acknowledgments

Stuart Reges, a computer science professor at the University of Washington, received a $600,000 settlement from the university after being investigated for including a parody of a land acknowledgment on his course syllabus. Reges posted the parody in 2023, and the university opened an investigation that lasted nearly a year. The settlement amount and terms were disclosed in 2025 or 2026 following resolution of the dispute.
