Instagram’s AI detection is a mess (again)

Friday, September 4, 2026

Instagram's system for labeling artificially generated content has incorrectly labeled user-submitted images as AI-created in recent weeks, according to user reports. Meta, which owns Instagram, applies the "AI Content" label to posts to indicate synthetic generation, but users report the system has marked photos that were not created or edited with generative AI tools. The cause of the mislabeling and scope of affected accounts have not been specified by Meta.
