Newsom faces criticism for state's stance on trans athletes in girls' sports after SCOTUS ruling
Saturday, July 4, 2026
California Governor Gavin Newsom's office announced the state will maintain its current policy allowing transgender athletes to compete in sports consistent with their gender identity, following a Supreme Court decision upholding state bans on such participation. The Supreme Court ruling on June 28, 2024 affirmed Montana's law restricting transgender girls from competing in girls' sports by a 6-3 vote. California law permits transgender athletes to compete according to their gender identity under Assembly Bill 1228, passed in 2013, which aligns athletic team placement with students' asserted gender identity rather than sex assigned at birth. Newsom's administration has not indicated plans to change the state's policy.
