Marijuana users may face hidden driving danger that standard tests can miss

Thursday, September 3, 2026

A study found that people who consumed cannabis edibles had THC blood levels approximately one-tenth of those who smoked cannabis, despite showing comparable levels of driving impairment in testing. Standard roadside THC tests may not detect impairment in edible users at the same rate as smokers because the tests measure THC concentration rather than impairment level. Researchers measured both groups's THC levels and driving performance but noted that current testing methods do not reliably correlate blood THC concentration to actual driving ability across different consumption methods.
