Deadly mosquito-borne virus claims first life in major US city as cases spread

Chicago recorded its first West Nile virus death in 2026 following the city's rainiest summer in years, according to the Chicago Department of Public Health. The department has conducted insecticide spraying across 15 community areas in response to the cases. West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquitoes.
