U.S. Manufacturing Productivity Revised Sharply Higher in Second Quarter
Thursday, September 3, 2026
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics revised manufacturing productivity upward for the second quarter, with gains concentrated in durable-goods industries. Manufacturing employment increased in both the first and second quarters. According to the data, durable-goods manufacturers achieved productivity growth of at least 3.6 percent in consecutive quarters while adding jobs in both periods, a combination that has not occurred outside of post-recession recoveries since the late 1990s.
