A martian rock has lots of carbon on it, and it's not clear why
Saturday, July 4, 2026
NASA's Perseverance rover detected elevated carbon levels in a rock sample collected from Mars's Jezero Crater, according to findings from the rover's analysis instruments. The source of the carbon remains undetermined. Possible explanations include biological origin, chemical weathering processes, or delivery by meteorites. Scientists said additional analysis is needed to determine how the carbon arrived in the rock.
