Josefina Aguirre operates a meat market in Spanish Harlem that is located two blocks from a grocery store opened under City Council Member Zohran Mamdani's municipal grocery program, which receives taxpayer funding. Aguirre's parents immigrated to New York and established the business. The municipal grocery initiative was announced by Mamdani as part of a city effort to address food access in underserved neighborhoods.
