States now must report undocumented immigrants to DHS or risk federal funding, DOJ says
Wednesday, September 2, 2026

The DOJ opinion applies to both assistance programs and establishes reporting as a condition of federal funding eligibility. States have discretion in implementation timing and procedures for compliance with the reporting requirement.
