University of California, Berkeley scientists tested a compound called TOFA on obese mice and found it increased energy expenditure without reducing lean muscle mass, according to research the institution reported. Semaglutide, a widely used weight-loss medication, has been associated with lean muscle loss in some studies. The researchers did not specify a timeline for testing the compound in humans or its availability for clinical use.
