California bill recognizing 2 Islamic holidays nears Newsom’s desk

The California legislature passed a bill that would direct the state to recognize Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as official holidays for public schools and state employees, sending it to Governor Gavin Newsom for signature or veto. The bill designates these two Islamic holidays as days when state offices would be closed and students excused from school attendance. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, while Eid al-Adha occurs approximately two months later in the Islamic calendar. California currently recognizes Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, and several other holidays as official state observances.
