Seneca Nation leader calls Trump's Lake America renaming 'unpresidential,' demands reversal

Seneca Nation President Clayworth Bigfire called President Trump's renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America "unpresidential" and said the action violates the 1794 Canandaigua Treaty between the United States and the Seneca Nation. Bigfire demanded the Trump administration reverse the decision. The treaty, signed in November 1794, established boundaries and protections for Seneca lands and is cited by the Seneca Nation as governing the use of the lake. Trump signed an executive order renaming the lake in 2026.
