“We’re not doing 30 bets a year”: Vijay Pande on betting small after running $4 billion at a16z

Vijay Pande left Andreessen Horowitz's biotech practice, which managed approximately 4 billion dollars, in 2025 to found VZVC, a smaller investment firm focused on AI and biology. Pande stated the firm operates with a reduced number of annual investments compared to his previous role. He described biology as transitioning from discovery-based science to engineering-based approaches, and identified clinical trials as a persistent cost constraint in drug development. Pande argued that open, shared datasets rather than proprietary ones would enable AI to have greater impact on medical advancement.
