Twenty-three states do not have laws restricting transgender athletes from competing on women's sports teams, according to a tracking analysis conducted after the Supreme Court ruling on the issue. The states with such restrictions include Florida, where Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation in 2023 requiring athletes to compete based on their sex assigned at birth. Governors in states without restrictions have taken varied positions, from active opposition to proposed bans to no stated position on the matter.
