The Social Security Trust Fund is projected to deplete its reserves, after which the program would be able to pay approximately 80 percent of scheduled benefits from incoming payroll taxes, according to the Social Security Administration's 2025 trustees report. The issue has received limited attention in recent political campaigns and public discourse.
