Norway’s King Harald, who fled Nazis as a child and modernized monarchy, dies at 89

Friday, August 28, 2026

King Harald V of Norway died at age 89. Harald was born in 1937 and became king in 1991 following the death of his father, King Olav V. In 1968, Harald married Sonja Haraldsen, a commoner, which required parliamentary approval and represented a departure from Norwegian royal tradition. Harald's reign saw the Norwegian monarchy remain a constitutional monarchy while the country developed as an oil-producing nation.
