Meta addresses ‘pervert glasses’ reputation with a privacy fix and a new marketing campaign

Thursday, August 27, 2026

Meta updated its Ray-Ban smart glasses to disable recording when the front-facing LED light is covered during video capture. Alex Himel, Meta's vice president of augmented reality, announced the change on Threads, stating "the camera will now stop working if the light is covered during a recording." The modification addresses a technical capability that allowed users to obscure the indicator light while continuing to record video.
