California says states, Meta agree to $17 billion settlement in child safety trial

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced that Meta Platforms agreed to a settlement valued at $17 billion in a multistate lawsuit regarding child safety on its platforms. The agreement includes financial payments to participating states and requires Meta to implement changes to Instagram and Facebook's design and operations. California AG Bonta stated the settlement represents compensation for harm to minors. Meta did not admit wrongdoing as part of the settlement terms.
