Sony’s PlayStation disc factory is already being repurposed
Friday, July 3, 2026
Sony's Thalgau, Austria manufacturing plant, which produces 600,000 discs daily, is being repurposed as PlayStation disc production declines. Dietmar Tanzer, president of Sony DADC, Sony's disc manufacturing division, told Austrian broadcaster ORF Salzburg that approximately half of the plant's current output is PlayStation discs. The shift reflects declining demand for physical game media as digital distribution has become the industry standard. No timeline was provided for the complete transition away from disc production at the facility.
