Mexico held an investment-grade bond rating of "A" until recently and was historically regarded for fiscal discipline among emerging markets. The country's bond rating has declined and Mexico now pays higher interest rates than neighboring countries with lower credit ratings, including Guatemala and Panama. Mexico's credit standing has moved closer to speculative-grade classification.
