The United States received over 1,900 flag design submissions before President Dwight Eisenhower selected the 50-star design in 1959, following Hawaii's admission to the Union. The winning design featured stars arranged in nine rows. Eisenhower chose the submission from Robert G. Heft, a high school student from Lancaster, Ohio. The 50-star flag was officially adopted on July 4, 1960.
