Robotaxis are real now — so is the pushback

Governor Kathy Hochul of New York withdrew a proposal in 2026 that would have permitted driverless robotaxis to operate outside New York City after opposition from taxi drivers, labor unions, and state lawmakers. Commercial driverless taxi service remains illegal in New York outside the city limits. Robotaxi services are operating in other U.S. locations amid ongoing regulatory debates over safety standards, insurance requirements, and labor protections.
