Climate change is unearthing archaeological discoveries, while also threatening them

Sunday, August 23, 2026

Jørgen Hollesen, a Senior Researcher at the National Museum of Denmark, has documented how climate change is exposing archaeological artifacts in Greenland and other regions while simultaneously degrading them. Melting permafrost has revealed previously frozen artifacts, including textiles and organic remains that provide information about past human settlements. The same warming that exposes these materials also accelerates their deterioration once exposed to air and moisture, creating a race to document and preserve them before they are lost.
