Mexican cartels have extorted avocado growers in Mexico, according to law enforcement and agricultural officials. The U.S. Department of State and Department of Homeland Security have raised concerns about Mexico's avocado production and organized crime activities in growing regions. U.S. avocado imports from Mexico totaled approximately 80 percent of American consumption in recent years, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data.
