Detroit Public Schools Community District expanded its cash incentive program to middle schoolers after reporting a 9-point drop in chronic absenteeism among high school students in the prior year. The district offers students up to $1,000 for perfect attendance. The expansion came after high school participants in the program reduced chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10 or more school days per year.
