Prince Charles narrowly escaped an avalanche at Klosters, Switzerland in 1988 that killed his close friend Major Hugh Lindsay. Had Prince Charles died in the incident, five-year-old Prince William would have become heir apparent at that time. The incident occurred while the royal party was skiing in the Alpine resort.
