Thunder + fiber-optic cabling used for seismic imaging

Friday, August 21, 2026

Researchers used seismic waves generated by thunderstorms and fiber-optic cable infrastructure to image subsurface geological features. The method detected vibrations produced by thunder and converted them into seismic data through existing fiber-optic networks. This approach allowed scientists to map underground structures without deploying dedicated seismic equipment.
